Fear of waterborne diseases as Eastleigh taps run dry

Among the areas affected are the Eastleigh Air Force Base, Pangani, Huruma, Kariobangi and Mlango Kubwa, South B and South C.

Eastleigh is among the areas currently experiencing water supply interruption in a list released by the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) necessitated by a temporary shutdown of the Ngethu Water Treatment Plant.

The company indicated that a section of city residents will experience dry taps between Thursday, October 12 from 6 a.m. to Friday, October 13 at 12 p.m.

Among the areas listed are the Eastleigh Air Force Base, Pangani, Huruma, Kariobangi, Mlango Kubwa, South B, South C, Tassia, Fedha, Embakasi and Industrial Area.

Other areas include Buruburu, Lang'ata, Kibra, the University of Nairobi Main Campus, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Dandora, Umoja 1 & 2, Kenyatta University, Kayole, Parklands and Bahati.

According to NWSC, the shutdown of the plant will facilitate the repair of a major leakage on the raw water pipeline between the Matara Raw Water Chamber and the Ngethu Water Treatment Plant.

"It will also involve carrying out a scheduled maintenance at the Kiambu reservoir, in preparation for the upcoming El Niño rains," NWSC said in a statement released Tuesday.

"Whilst every effort will be made to restore the supply of water as soon as possible, we request all customers in the affected areas to use water sparingly during the period of interruption."
